Pomona-Pitzer 13, UD 2

In the first home game of the season, the Lady Crusaders were outscored by the Pomona-Pitzer Hens by a final score of 13-2. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Massey (Amarillo, TX/River Road H.S.) played the entire 60 minutes of the game in goal. There were 25 shots on goal, she allowed 13 goals, and recorded 12 saves.

UD’s only goals came from senior attack/midfielder Johanna Weston (Sugar Land, TX/Dulles H.S.). She made her shots count taking 3 shots on goal and scoring twice in the second half of play. Freshman attack/midfielder Christine McFarland (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park Memorial H.S.) led the team with 8 shots, 6 shots on goal and also had 5 ground balls. She was 7-17 in draw controls and had 1 caused turnover. Other leading players for UD included freshman attack Alyssa Vijil (Spring, TX/Klein H.S.) with 3 shots and 3 shots on goal and junior attack Becky Harris (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale Prep) who added 3 shots, 2 shots on goals, 4 ground balls, and 2 caused turnovers. Harris also assisted on 1 of Weston’s goals. Freshman attack/midfielder Jenny Kautzky (Perry, IA/Dowling Catholic H.S.) contributed 2 shots, 1 shot on goal, 4 ground balls, and 1 caused turnover.

The team combined for 26 shots, 29 ground balls (outdoing the opposing team, who had 26), and 12 saves for the game.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 20, UD 1

In a match-up against a very talented Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team, the Lady Crusaders lacrosse squad was defeated 20-1. The lone Crusader goal came late in the second half at the hands of freshman attack/midfielder Christine McFarland (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park Memorial H.S), who has started off her career with two solid performances for the Lady Crusaders. She also led the team with 10 ground balls, recorded 2 caused turnovers, took 4 shots (including 3 on goal) and scored once.

With a roster consisting of several freshman, two juniors, and only two seniors, the Lady Crusaders struggled to match the aggression and experience of the older Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team. Today’s strength for the team showed in their ability to pick up ground balls where UD was led by McFarland’s 10, while both junior defenders Cindy Parks (Phoenix AZ/Xavier College Prep) and Michelle Gomez (Miami FL/Archbishop Carroll H.S) recorded 3 a piece. Junior defender Liz Chadwick (Tampa, FL), senior attack/midfielder Johanna Weston (Sugar Land, TX/Dulles H.S.) and freshman attack/midfielder Jenny Kautzky (Perry, IA/Dowling Catholic H.S.) also had 2 each. Altogether, UD was able to out gain the Athenas 26-18 in that category, showing that even though they lack experience, they the hustle needed to overcome adversity.

Colorado College 17, UD 2

UD lost to another talented opponent Sunday by a score of 17-2. After going into the half down 1-12, the Crusaders played a close second half, only allowing 5 Colorado College goals. Freshman attack/midfielder Christine McFarland (Floral Park NY/Floral Park Memorial H.S) again performed well for UD, scoring both goals and adding three ground balls and six draw controls. Junior captain Becky Harris (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale Prep) assisted on one of McFarland’s goals, and added three ground balls and one caused turnover.

The team takes to the road next week as they play Swarthmore College and Drew University on March 8 and 9. The game on the 8th against Swarthmore College starts at 1:00pm, while the game against Crew University on the 9th starts at 11:00am. Both games are in San Antonio, TX.
