University of Dallas women’s basketball loses both games at AD3I tournament

Nebraska Wesleyan 67, UD 55

The University of Dallas Lady Crusaders lost by 12 points against Nebraska Wesleyan University 67-55 in Lincoln, NE. Senior guard Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) led the team with 17 points, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds in 36 minutes. Freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) added 11 points and 9 rebounds, while freshman guard Ashley Holder (Crawford, TX/Crawford H.S.) added 7 points.

UC-Santa Cruz 61, UD 47

In a final game uncharacteristic of one of their most successful seasons in recent years, the Lady Crusaders fell to the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 61-47. After opening the game with a strong defensive first half, holding the Banana Slugs to only 27% from the field, the Lady Crusaders went into the locker room with a 28-26 lead. UC- Santa Cruz, a team noted for their aggressive defensive playing style, only allowed 19 UD points in the second half and was able to pull ahead for the victory.

Saturday’s game was the final one UD seniors Angel Noble (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.), Beth Teer (McKinney, TX/McKinney North H.S.) and Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.). Noble played a well-rounded game, contributing in every statistical category while Cardinal finished out her career with 10 points and 5 steals. Continuing her solid play in the middle, freshman Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds and 24 points, which set gave her 454 points and 199 rebounds in her first campaign with the team.

With a final record of 14 wins and 13 losses, the Lady Crusaders’ rebuilding project looks to be right on track, as their win-loss totals have improved every year for the last three years. First year head coach Jennifer Fleming led UD to their first winning season since the 2004-05 season, and the future looks bright for the freshman class. The 14 wins this season is also a school record for most wins in a season.
