New on DVD: Into the Wild and Awake
One Oscar contender and one brain-dead medical thriller highlight this week's releases for your home theater viewing enjoyment.
Out on DVD this week are two films of interest we reviewed during their theatrical runs.
Director Sean Penn allows the landscape tell the remarkable true story of Christopher McCandless in Into the Wild, which earned Hal Holbrook an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and Jay Cassidy another for Editing. It's a visually stimulating film with finely drawn characters, and that's why it made most folks' top ten movies of the year list.
Allow me to refresh your memory in regard to the PR campaign trumpeting the release of the medical thriller Awake, which used an all-caps WARNING statement to declare that the film might not be suitable for those "about to undergo anesthesia for surgery." (Anesthesia for something other than surgery - like recreation, for instance - would not be a problem in this scenario.) This Jessica Alba movie also features Hayden Christensen and the ever-marvelous Terence Howard. Bottom line: never tell your anesthetist to take it easy.
