Women’s basketball: Texas Wesleyan 75, Jarvis College 70

The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (19-10, 10-6 RRAC) finished the regular season with a 75-70 win at Jarvis Christian College (11-14, 7-9) on Monday.

The first half was all Texas Wesleyan as the Lady Rams shot 39% from the field while holding Jarvis to just 30%. The Rams led by as many as 11, 35-24, before the Bulldogs closed the half on a 5-2 mini-run to trail 37-29 at the intermission.

The second half was more of the same as Texas Wesleyan shot 52% from the field while holding the Bulldogs to 35%. The Rams led by as many as 13, 68-55, but Jarvis made things interesting down the stretch.

The Lady Bulldogs made it a two-possession game at 70-65 with one minute to play. However, Texas Wesleyan hit 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to come away with the 75-70 victory.

Brittany Turner led the way with 19 points. Britannia Champion added 11, and Kim Gatlin scored 10 for Texas Wesleyan. Jarvis’ Ashley Brooks led all scorers with 23 points after going 9-of-27 from the field and 5-of-12 from long range.

For the game, Texas Wesleyan out shot Jarvis 46%-35% and out rebounded the Bulldogs 47-36.

With the win, the Lady Rams locked up the 3rd seed in this week’s Red River Athletic Conference Tournament in Waxahachie, TX. The Rams will meet 6th seeded Bacone College at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Waxahachie High School.
