DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks surprised no one Thursday night at the AAC, putting up little effort against the smoking-hot Rockets en route to a 113-98 loss. With leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki suspended for a hard foul he committed against Utah, the Mavericks kept it close for an entire half before the inevitable third-quarter collapse left them chasing the Rockets the rest of the game.

The Rockets don't need Yao to babysit them anymore
The Mavericks were led by Josh Howard, who scored 21 points on 8-of-19 shooting, as well as collecting 7 rebounds. Jason Kidd obviously missed the Big German, putting up his worst statistical game since his first with the Mavs: just 7 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and zero steals.
Jason Terry added 17, while Eric Dampier was characteristically unable to take advantage of Yao Ming's absence, weakly putting up just 7 points and 8 rebounds.
The loss, the Mavs' third consecutive, dropped them to 39-23, two games behind the surging Rockets, who have now won 17 games in a row.
