Women’s basketball: UNT 75, New Orleans 62

The North Texas women’s basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 75-62 win against New Orleans in the opening round game at the Super Pit on Wednesday night.
The Mean Green (14-17) will play top seed Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 pm. New Orleans finishes its season with a record of 13-17.
After a close game against the Privateers on Saturday night, the Mean Green used a large run in the first half to defeat New Orleans in convincing fashion.
Amber Jackson led five players in double figures with 16 points. She was two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight boards. Jo Hall scored 12 of her 15 points in the first half. Talicia Sanders was instrumental on the boards, bringing down 11 rebounds.
After New Orleans tied the game at 10-10, North Texas went on a 22-6 run to take a 32-16 lead. Sanders was key in the run with six rebounds. North Texas would not let its lead dip below 13 the rest of the game.
North Texas opened the second half with an 11-4 run to take a 25-point lead, 50-25. Jackson scored 10 of her 16 points in the second period. Brittney James was also pivotal in the second period, scoring seven of her 12 points.
The Mean Green also scored 17 points from the free throw line. Yari Escalera scored six of her 12 points from the charity stripe.
