McKinney ISD High School art students receive medals at Region 10 VASE competition
PLANO – On Saturday, Feb. 23, art students from McKinney Boyd High School, McKinney High School and McKinney North High School participated in the Region 10N Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) with their artwork and won several individual awards.
A total of six students from McKinney Boyd High School and McKinney High School advanced to the state competition which is scheduled to be held at the University of Houston’s Clear Lake Campus on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13.
Students participating in the VASE competition are required to submit artwork created in art classes, and then engage in an interview/critique with a certified juror who evaluates the work based on a standards based rubric. The judging process also involves the student defining their understanding of the processes involved in the development of the artwork.
Academically eligible high school students in grades 9-12 throughout Texas participate in the VASE competition annually. More than 1,600 entries were submitted in the 2008 VASE competition and only approximately 150 students were chosen to advance to the state competition.
Students that advanced to the state competition include Trisha Alexander, Laura Bohan, Grant Gibson, Matt Lawless, David Matthews and Nick Slay.
At the state level, students participate in art workshops, portfolio reviews and have a chance to earn college scholarships.
In addition to the students that advanced to the state competition, several McKinney ISD high school art students also received medals and a superior rating of “IV” for the combined scores of the interview and artwork evaluation.
McKinney Boyd High School had a total of 25 students receive medals; six of them earning more than one medal for their work. McKinney High School had 19 students earn medals with four students receiving more than one medal for their artwork submissions. McKinney North High School had 19 students earn medals and five students receive more than one medal.
“I want to congratulate all of our students for a very successful weekend at VASE. We are proud of all who participated and we wish all those who are advancing to state competition the best of luck.” said Roy Renzenbrink, Director of Fine Arts for McKinney ISD.
