Savor Dallas opening night on Friday thrives despite chill

Turnout at Nasher Center, Meyerson Center, and Victory Park robust if slightly frostbitten. Good thing there was wine.

Opening night of Savor Dallas, the annual food-and-wine weekend event in Dallas' arts district, attracted hundreds of enthusiastic participants on Friday, who braved temperatures that dipped into the 30s for an opportunity to sample wines from more than 50 manufacturers and snacks from area restaurants.

The event started at 5 p.m. at the Morton Meyerson Symphony Theater and the Nasher Sculpture Center, where attendees elbowed for sips of Estancia, Demoiselle, Hess, Ruinart, and more. One of the more popular booths featured cabernet and merlot from Dallas' own Kathryn Hall, who poured the wine herself, aided by husband Craig. Champagne maker Taittinger offered a quintet of bubblies ranging from the Prelude to the Prestige Rose; if you were pushy enough to get to the front and stay there, you could theoretically try them all.

At 7 p.m., attendees made their way to Victory Park plaza, where restaurants offered tidbits such as N9NE's miniature "slider" burgers, Medina Oven's spicy shrimp, and sushi rolls from Kenichi. Vintners such as Rancho Zabaco poured sips, and 10 Cane served miniature mojitos; but the longest lines (and shortest pay-offs) were definitely for the food.

The weekend event continues on Saturday with tasting seminars at Victory Park restaurants during the day, concluding with the International Grand Tasting on Saturday night at the Plaza of the Americas and Westin City Center Hotel.
