McKinney going ballistic on drunk drivers

— The McKinney Police Department is working with TxDOT to curb drunk driving during the next several weeks. Starting Friday March 7, MPD and local law enforcement agencies are making an extra effort to spot—and stop—drunk drivers. The McKinney Police Department has received a grant from TxDOT to increase their manpower focused on drinking and driving. A similar effort over the holidays resulted in several arrests.

"Safety experts continually remind us that drunk driving is a huge danger on our roadways," said McKinney Police Department Assistant Chief Rex Redden. "Getting behind the wheel after you've been drinking is always dangerous, and we are urging residents to never drink and drive."

Year after year, Texas is among the states with the highest incidents of drunk driving in the nation according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). In 2006, 1,677 motorists died in alcohol-related crashes on Texas roads.

"Our Police officers are committed to keeping McKinney streets safe," said Redden. "Designate a sober driver before you start drinking, call someone to pick you up if you have been drinking and need to get somewhere, or just stay where you are. If you drink and drive, you will go to jail."
