Former DART Lynn Flint Shaw was found dead, along with her husband, Rufus Shaw, Jr., at the couple's home Monday night in an apparent murder-suicide. Dallas police are reporting that Rufus Shaw died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

UPDATE: Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert has released a statement: “Our hearts and deepest prayers go out to Rufus and Lynn Flint Shaw’s son and family. This tragedy has claimed two great friends of Dallas. Rufus was passionate about improving the Southern Sector. Lynn gave almost every ounce of energy she had to making Dallas better. From the arts to transportation to our bond campaigns, Lynn was devoted to making Dallas a world class city for all its citizens. That enthusiasm and generosity of spirit is going to be sorely missed.”

UPDATE 2: Rufus Shaw left a message for State Sen. Royce West shortly before he killed Flint Shaw and himself, telling West that they would be dead soon and for West to help their son.

That is a horrible shame. I can't even imagine what would lead someone to follow that path.

People are starting to leave memorial notes on Rufus' last column at Dallas Blog (which is only intermittently reachable this morning):

I am shocked at the news of the Shaws this morning. Dallas has lost two great people.

The Observer has a piece running tomorrow (which probably means printed before news of the deaths) that shows confirmed emails from Lynn Flint Shaw indicating she was part of a group of vote-wranglers from Tom Leppert's mayoral campaign and the Trinity referendum who were trying to control minority contractor access:

Most recent is that they both called the son and told him they were going to do it. Both willingly. Can't imagine a call like that. Don't want to. How bad could it have been?
