McKINNEY – McKinney Independent School District High School band students recently competed in the Region 25 University Interscholastic League (UIL) Solo/Ensemble Contest and won several awards. More than 160 soloist and ensembles from McKinney Boyd, McKinney High and McKinney North earned Superior Ratings in the regional competition that included high school band students from such school districts as Allen, McKinney, Sherman and Wylie.
McKinney Boyd had a total of 64 soloists and 51 ensembles that earned a Superior Rating and received medals for their performance. McKinney High had a total of 44 soloists and 44 ensembles which also earned a Superior Rating and received medals and McKinney North had a total of 53 soloists and 45 ensembles that earned a Superior Rating and received medals in the Regional Solo/Ensemble competition.
In order to participate in the UIL Region 25 Solo/Ensemble contest, students must prepare a solo prescribed on the UIL music list or be a performing member of a small ensemble that performs a piece from the UIL prescribed music list. Students must also be academically eligible to compete at the time of the contest.
“The whole process of preparing a solo or ensemble and then performing it helps any student who takes on this challenge become a better musician,” said Roy Renzenbrink, Director of Fine Arts for McKinney ISD. “No matter what rating they receive, they can’t help but be more accomplished because of it. We are proud of all who participated and we wish all those who are advancing to the state competition the best of luck.”
