SXSW film awards presentation 2008
On Tuesday evening, March 11, organizers of the SXSW Film Festival had the fun of handing out awards to filmmakers whose offerings were judged to be of special merit.
As festival producer Matt Dentler noted, this was nothing like the Oscars, because there was no pretense at entertainment - just plain old fashioned grandstanding and name-calling (in a good way).
The comedic highlight of the evening (my favorite kind) occurred when high schooler Wesley Bronez came up to receive the award for the best achievement in the Texas High School Competition. Clearly nonplussed, young Wesley did the equivalent of a Gomer Pyle and left the stage, whereupon Dentler quipped: "You're getting laid tonight, Wesley. That's just the way these things work, trust me."
I'm tellin' ya, folks, it's different in Austin.
