Vetro Glassblowing Studio might make you feel naughty

A glass blower doing what he does best -- twirling the punty before he wets if off and puts it in the glory hole.
A glass blower doing what he does best -- twirling the punty before he wets if off and puts it in the glory hole.

Warning: if you still laugh like a school kid when people say things like “duty,” you won’t last a second in the paperweight-making class at Vetro Glassblowing Studio in Grapevine. Although this may be one of the most extreme and potentially hazardous crafts one could add to a repertoire, the glass workers’ lexicon is nothing short of a b-grade porn script.

Let’s begin with the furnace opening, also known as the glory hole. Yes, you read that correctly. Then there’s the punty, the rod that holds the glass that must be twirled and rubbed constantly so the molten goo doesn’t fly off of the tip. And if that’s not enough innuendo, you’ll also hear phrases like necking, jacking and wetting off tossed about.

But once you get past the unintentional naughtiness of it all, there’s plenty to be learned. The four-hour introductory course costs $175 and gives you a one-on-one walk-through with an instructor and the opportunity to make two paperweights that you get to keep. From there, you can graduate to paperweight 102 or even glass blowing – we’re sure the vocabulary for that must be nothing short of titillating.

Check them out online to learn more, or stop by for a tour. Their glory hole is all warmed up and ready to go.

Pavel Lishin, says:

I'm always surprised by how many people don't know what a glory hole is.

Pleasantly surprised, I guess. It would be kind of awkward if you asked someone, like a parent, and they nodded enthusiastically and said, "Oh, yeah."

Make fun all you want, but these are really nice, talented people with a classy shop. Way too hip for Grapevine. They love company, and they are seriously into FIRE!!!
