Dallas weekend offerings to make you feel lucky

0

If you’re the superstitious type, watch out for this week. In addition to today being lucky number 13, Saturday brings the Ides of March – and we all know how that ended up. At least Caesar got a cute haircut named after him. But we digress. Despite the jinxed dates, there are some far-from-ominous outings to attend. So throw some salt over your shoulder, spin counterclockwise three times, French kiss a one-legged, syphilitic gypsy and let the weekend begin.

“So You Think You Can Drag” -- Club Rush

Tonight, 11:00 p.m.

If you’re just now learning about this, it doesn’t give you much time to get ready. Here’s what we suggest. For a gown, use your curtains a la Scarlet O’Hara and maybe throw on a handful of glitter for good measure. For a wig, just sedate the neighbor’s Shih Tzu and hot glue it to a shower cap. As for a name, just about any disease or prescription drug will work: Ginger Vitis, Miss Moxy Contin, etc. Dallas drag superstar Whitney Paige hosts this anything-goes amateur hour and the winner gets $100. Now stick that in your moneymaker and shake it.

Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo

Saturday, March 15, 7:00 p.m.

Queer fun fact: Yo La Tengo collaborated with Yoko Ono to record “Hedwig’s Lament/Exquisite Corpse” from the cult-classic Hedwig and the Angry Inch for a charity album benefiting the Harvey Milk School. Music fun fact: Yo la Tengo sounded great, but Yoko Ono still sounded like a cat trapped in a sausage grinder.

Tickets: $20

Dallas Museum of Art (Horchow Auditorium)

Symphonic Sundays at the Nasher

Sunday, March 16, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Nothing cures a Saturday-night hangover like culture-filled Sunday complete with fancy brunch and chamber music from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. And remember to wear those really dark sunglasses. The effects are two-fold. The sun won’t induce a migraine and passersby won’t be able to see those steamer trunks you call under-eye circles.

Tickets: $30 concert only; $30 brunch only; $50 all-inclusive

Sushi & Sake 101

Monday, March 17, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Raw Raw Sashimi Boom Bah - this “how to” course will have you cheering for more as you make (and eat) your own sushi roll. You’ll also learn about the history and production of sake, how to buy sushi-grade fish and what you need to make sushi at home.

Cost: $75 per person

Sushi Samba (in the Galleria)

Ralph Lauren Men’s Spring Trunk Show

Through March 30

Calling all label queens, this event has your name written all over it (so to speak). The Spring 2008 “Made to Measure” affair showcases ol’ Ralphie’s entire collection of suits, dress shirts, trousers and sport coats all hand-tailored to your measurements. So find a cute salesman and make sure to get your inseam taken just right - even if it takes all afternoon.
