The Environmental Protection Agency released new smog requirements Wednesday that would mean failing scores for 22 counties in Texas (including Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton). The current standard for smog is 85 parts per billion, which the above named counties already fail. The new standard will be 75 parts per billion. Under the new standards, 345 counties nationwide would need to clean up their air and are required to submit proposals for how they intend to do so by 2013.
Interested parties on both sides of the issue are finding fault with the EPA's new measure. Governor Perry criticized the new standards, claiming that it would unfairly target Texas, costing the state's taxpayers more given that Texas produces such a large percentage of the U.S.'s gas and oil. Clean air advocates are disappointed that the standards were not lowered more so, but are hopeful that this will create a trend and lead to better research, implementation, etc.

I fail to understand why the citizens health in this state is routinely ignored. The governor is unhappy because the air that is killing us will violate clean air rules, and need to be 'cleaned-up'. What's wrong with this picture?
I would love to not need my asthma medication everyday. Being able to just breathe comfortably is nothing more than a fantasy in Dallas.

Governor Goodhair has alot of vested interest in the oil/gas business, im not surprised he's livid about it. Im of the belief its time for Texas to take the lead in clean energy such as wind and solar, which we have plenty of but isnt being used accordingly.
