Valley Ranch homeowners’ association meeting results in unholy havoc at meeting in church

The ongoing saga of the Valley Ranch Association homeowners association continues: A meeting on Thursday night inside a Baptist church ended in chaos when the homeowners learned the results of a recent election. They were 1. happy about getting two seats on the board but 2. not happy that a member of the Valley Ranch's commercial association got a seat, and started booing and heckling so aggressively that the meeting was shut down.

This is a culmination of a year-long struggle that's been going on at this cookie-cutter mega-development in Irving. Homeowners associations often devolve into petty squabbling, and this one represents 30 subdivisions and 30,000 residents. When the board started getting military over things like yard signs, an opposition group, Valley Ranch Voice, formed. The DMN cites police records showing that cops went out there at least three times between March and September '07, and that one homeowner threatened to shoot a worker for trying to remove a garage sale sign.

The DMN account of the meeting avoids taking a position as to whether the board members have in fact been "secretive" as the opposition group claims, or whether the homeowners are just a bunch of armchair quarterbacks. This much is certain: Being a board member for an HOA -- which is almost never a paid position and almost always requires more time than one might expect -- is a thankless job.
