“UnNatural Disasters” exhibition to open Mar. 28 at UTD

An artists’ commentary on a world, which, as a result of anomaly, misinterpretation, appropriation, manipulation, exploitation or neglectful intervention, has had its fate altered from the norm.

The University of Texas at Dallas will host UnNatural Disasters in the Main Gallery of the University’s Visual Arts Building March 28 – April 18. The exhibition, curated by faculty member Greg Metz, is free and open to the public.

Artists in UnNatural Disasters include Yasser Aggour, Andy Amato, Rita Barnard, Elaine Bradford, Julien Diehn, Brandon Kennedy, Victor Offen, Nick Oberthaler, Betty Washington and the artist duo Animal Charm.

Metz describes the exhibition as “an artists’ commentary on a world, which, as a result of anomaly, misinterpretation, appropriation, manipulation, exploitation or neglectful intervention, has had its fate altered from the norm.”

Artists in this group exhibition use a variety of processes. “From dystopian global conundrums, to bio-engineering fright shows, to bad hair days, this show lends a creative perspective to disasters bordered by witness, humor and speculation,” Metz says.

According to Metz, “‘Natural’ has become a confused idiom in our culturally redefined habitat. Disasters that could once be attributed to the forces of nature are now, more often than not, attributed to human intervention in ways that are anything but ‘natural’. This exhibition features artists from as far away as Vienna, whose work grapples with how this scene is transforming the very definition of what is ‘natural.’ Works include video, digital photography, painting and sculptural installation.”

The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, March 28, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
