The 31st annual Texas Christian University Jazz Festival kicks off two days of groovy tunes on Friday, March 28 with a performance (at 7:30 p.m. in the Ed Landreth Auditorium) of The Four Freshmen, accompanied by the TCU Jazz Ensemble.
Around under the name "The Four Freshmen" since the 1950's, the jazz vocal group presently consists of these guys, who obviously haven't themselves been around since that era, but are currently representing the brand, bringing their vocal harmonies to audiences worldwide.
Their show will feature all the group's greatest hits (It's a Blue World, Mood Indigo, Day By Day, Graduation Day) along with some exciting new material. They'll share the Friday evening stage with the TCU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Curt Wilson. Tickets are $20 at the door.
The cool jazz weekend continues on Sat. (March 29) with a day-long series of performances by area high school and middle school jazz ensembles. Trombonist Joe Jackson will be confabbing and jamming with the kid musicians during the day, then cutting loose with his seat-clearing riffs that evening during a concert with the TCU Jazz Ensemble.
The student recitals will take place in the Ed Landreth PepsiCo Recital Hall and are free to the public, while admission to the evening's concert (starting at 7:30) costs $10 at the door of the main auditorium.
