McKinney’s Faubion Middle School student wins third place in Congressional Essay Contest

Congressman Sam Johnson to Present Award During a Special Ceremony on Monday, March 24.

MCKINNEY – Rebecca Kow, a 6th grade student at Faubion Middle School in the McKinney Independent School District recently won an essay contest for the Third Congressional District. Congressman Sam Johnson will visit Faubion Middle School during a special ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 24 to present Ms. Kow with the award.

The essay contest was open to all middle school students in the Third Congressional District. Ms. Kow won third place overall and was the only 6th grade student to place in the competition.

February of 2008 marked the 35 year anniversary of Congressman Sam Johnson's return home after almost seven years of captivity during the Vietnam War. When he was a Prisoner of War, Congressman Johnson swore that if he ever made it home, he would try his hardest to ensure that veterans were never forgotten.

The essay topic, American Heroes: Our Veterans, was designed to represent a small token of gratitude for the personal sacrifices U.S veterans have made to their country. A panel of distinguished veterans judged the entries and selected first, second and third place winners.
