Congresswoman Johnson releases statement on 5th Anniversary of Iraq War

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the 30th District of Texas, which includes Downtown Dallas; Northeast Dallas, East Oak Cliff, Pleasant Grove, Balch Springs, DeSoto, Lancaster, Hutchins, and parts of Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Glen Heights, Wilmer and Ovilla. She is Chairwoman of the House Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee and the highest-ranking Texan on the House Committee on Transportation. She is also a Senior Democratic Whip in the House Leadership Structure and a member of the Science and Technology Committee.
Today the Congresswoman released the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the commencement of the Iraq war:
“Today, on the fifth anniversary of the commencement of the war in Iraq, I commend the courage, commitment and patriotism of the men and women serving in our armed forces, and of our veterans.
“By any measure, the cost of this war is too high. The lives of almost 4,000 Americans, including 61 from the Metroplex, and an estimated 151,000 Iraqis have been lost. Our country spends $338 million on the Iraq war each day. We are unable to focus on our domestic priorities, and we are facing a crisis in military preparedness and the ability to respond to new threats.
“This Administration betrayed the trust of our brave soldiers by failing to prepare for the Iraq war. It failed to safeguard and protect the lives of our troops by providing them with necessary equipment. And five years in, we still lack an exit strategy.
“We must bring an end to this war, and soon. And we must recommit to our veterans, providing them with the medical and financial support they deserve. We must address the high levels of unemployment and homelessness in our veteran population. We can never fully repay our troops for their sacrifice, but it is our duty to try.”
