African American Legal Association responds to Hispanic community leader’s racial comments

37

Steven Bolden

Steven Bolden

In the midst of the hotly contested Texas Democratic Primary and Caucus race, Adelfa Callejo, long-time Hispanic community leader speaking to KTVT-TV (Channel 11) made comments, which were offensive to various members of the African American community. The J.L. Turner Legal Association (JLTLA) issued a statement this week voicing their displeasure with her comments.

Speaking by phone on Tuesday, Steve Bolden, II, the President of JLTLA indicated the organization deliberately delayed addressing the issue during the election cycle. However, he shared, “We want to let the public know we found her comments disappointing.”

During the interview broadcast on February 27th, Callejo stated, “Obama simply has a problem that he happens to be black." Senator Hillary Clinton’s campaign released a statement rejecting and denouncing Callejo’s comment.

Bolden said, “Our association [JTLA] being one viewed as a gatekeeper for issues related to the black community and with the statements made, by one who is an esteemed lawyer here in town, merited a response from the JTLA.”

The JLTLA statement issued reads:

“The J.L. Turner Legal Association (“JLTLA”) publicly disapproves of the comments recently made by local Hispanic leader and attorney, Ms. Adelfa Callejo, concerning U.S. Senator Barack Obama. Ms. Callejo has worked tirelessly on behalf of Dallas’ Hispanic community, for which she should be commended. However, the JLTLA is compelled, at this historic time in American history, to publicly reject Ms. Callejo’s ill-considered generalizations about an esteemed public figure and, indeed, a broad cross-section of Americans.

Adelfa Callejo

Ms. Callejo’s unfortunate comments mark the line of demarcation between the “change” that millions of Americans have turned out for and the divisive politics of the past. Put bluntly, Ms. Callejo’s comments are out of touch with mainstream Dallas, Texas, and the rest of America. And they are simply wrong. To suggest that a candidate is not entitled to a citizen’s vote just because he is Black harkens back to the darkest periods in American history and, in 2008, is wholly unacceptable. Just as Senator Clinton realized that association with this sort of race baiting is intolerable and unacceptable, we trust that other elected officials and community organizations in Dallas and across Texas will repudiate Ms. Callejo’s statements as well.

Contrary to Ms. Callejo’s revisionist characterizations, Blacks and Hispanics, despite some historical and cultural differences, have successfully worked together in Dallas. The JLTLA has partnered with other organizations to, among other things: (1) publicly endorse the National Hispanic Bar Association’s bid to convene its national convention in the city of Dallas; (2) work jointly on law student “pipeline projects” to increase the number of attorneys of color living and working in Dallas; and (3) recently convene a meeting with Mayor Tom Leppert to discuss current economic development initiatives and make further inquiry into the City’s retention of minority law firms and lawyers handling Dallas’ legal matters. As Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. This is the interrelated structure of all reality. You can never be what you ought to be until I become what I ought to be.” Blacks and Hispanics have long enjoyed an alignment of common interests, from expanding educational opportunities and promoting economic development to ensuring access to justice and will continue to do so in the future.”

Bolden believes, “Ultimately the election will bring the two communities together. We are working with the two communities to address this very issue.” He indicated a forum is in the early planning stages with members of the African American and Hispanic community.

Sir, how can I get this forwarded to Mrs. Callejo?

I really take offense to the ascertion that Mrs. Callejo stated "Blacks did nothing for Hispanics!" If she thinks ANYONE has done more for America than African Americans, she's an idiot.
Lets start from the beginning:

Few can imagine the atrocity that Africans endured on the slave ships. The filth, the stench, the loss of life, the disease, the packing of men in spaces so tight they could neither turn, nor stand, nor squat, nor sit is beyond human comprehension. For fifty days or more at a time, per voyage, our ancestors were tortured. Tight packers herded as many Africans aboard as possible, arguing that net receipts from sales of slaves would off-set the number that died. Loose packers preferred to give their captives "breathing room", trusting that more would survive the journey under sanitary conditions. So great was the profit from the sale of the enslaved that most European captains filled their vessels to the top, adding a second platform, if necessary, barely twenty inches above the heads of those below, to accommodate more. Crammed in suffocating heat, held fast by chains bolted to the floor, forced to lie in their own waste, breathing air rancid with vomit, disease, and sickness. There amid huge rats that gnawed through wood and flesh, men went mad. There on floors covered with blood and excrement, pregnant women gave birth. There the living awoke, chained to the dead. The daily routine brought little relief. Mashed horse beans pounded to a pulp and served with slabber sauce, a mixture of flour, palm oil, and water twice a day. Next came the dancing of the slaves, a cruel form of exercise and amusement conducted by slave captains to keep their human captives in salable condition. After a few hours, they were again forced back into the hell below. It was this journey that brought millions of us to America, the West Indies, South America, and countries of Europe. 50 to 200 million have been estimated as dying in transport alone. No other race ever on Earth has survived the atrocities we did. Not the Jews, no one.

When we finally did arrive in America, they put tar on our wounds and oiled us down to make us pretty and shiny so that we netted max dollar at slave auctions. Did I mention they also divided families up and sold them to whoever? Now we've been sold and are now on the plantations. They strapped a plow on us and worked us like ox or cattle or horses. Unintentionally, they made us as strong as ox by working us like ox and feeding us the unwanted parts of pig, horses, etc... And unfortunately, many died from the fatal work-ethic forced upon us.

How dare you live in the country who's foundation (the textiles that my ancestor slaves produced...the cotton, the crops, etc...) was built by African Americans and say that Blacks never did anything for Hispanics. Where were you when Blacks built America? Where were you when they died for civil rights? Where were you when they were protecting America in disproportionate numbers?

What have Hispanics done for America? Did they stand with us during the battle for Civil Rights, giving their lives such as Martin Luthor King and many others did? I don't think so. But you think that you've done more for America than the African American? The U.S. Armed Forces are disproportionately African American. Please list the significant contributions provided by the Hispanics? When you see a African American in the U.S., please know that unlike the Hispanics, and other non-blacks, the African American race was created about 400 years ago right here by our white ancestors. We've been here in huge numbers from the get-go, only proceeded by the Native Americans. And a huge number of African Americans mated with the Native Americans, so their blood runs in a large number of us also, as does the blood of our white ancestors because they raped our slave ancestors. When you see an African American, know that they have been here since the 1600s.

And the only reason Hispanics outnumber us now is because our reproduction rate cannot keep up with the rate of illegals entering the U.S. The country WE built! That cake has already been baked, and we baked it! You can put a candle on it if you like, however, that cake is and has been done well before you even heard the name America... Watch "ROOTS!" That's the "G" rated version of what I've explained to you. Please take your unfounded BS and go back to Mexico! Leave America until you realize that the African American contributions to making this country great cannot be surpassed or even minutely compared, much less mentioned by your racist behind... Mucho gracias! BTW, I'm elated that my Commander-In-Chief-elect is a member of the race that built the greatest country ever. Even prouder that White Americans, along with Hispanics made it possible for Barack Obama to be elected President. I have nothing against Hispanics, just your racist behind!!!

Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion or generalization. Adelfa Callejo has been a great leader for many, many years. She does not speak for all latinos, just as Barack Obama does not speak for all blacks. Here in Dallas, the latino culture feels betrayed and left out in recent days with the street naming issues regarding Cesar Chavez. No street will be named for him as of now.(this is similar to what blacks felt many years ago when they pushed for street naming rights for thier selected leaders who made a difference for blacks back then, streets were finally named for them) Her opinions mean alot to many, including myself. I don't feel they were racist, just a little snippy, she feels left out, forgotten right now. Blacks, hispanics, american-indians and whites all have made a difference and helped this country greatly. Some more than others, some behefitted by coming to this great country, albeit under duress, from bad men, but that was generations ago. Calm down now everyone. Her statements were made 10 months ago, she may feel different now, education helps people refrain from comments that might be offensive to some. Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion!

LOL so Adelfa was a supporter of Hillary. She must be living under the delusion that whitey has done something for the Hispanics as well. Her age probably disallows one to remember what West Dallas looks like, and has looked like for years.

RUSSJFK, I find something wrong with your post in that MLK didn't fight for the rights of African Americans only. He/They fought for the Civil Rights of ALL people of color! That's why he was an incrdible American that deserved such recognition. HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR WHAT HE BELIEVED IN! I'm sorry, but it's hard to top that! And if Ms. Callefo (sic) can't understand that, she's senile...

American_Patriot, on MLK, he did not give his life for something he believed in, he was shot and killed by a crazy and hateful white man. Martin Luther could have lived to be 100 if it was in his cards to do so. MLK must have wanted to see the fruits of his labor come true one day. His famous speech/statement, "I may not get there with you,..", was a pretty good premonition on his part, of what might happen. But now surely he did not want to die, giving his life for just one cause.

Adelfa Callejo is no better than a Louis Farakhan or David Duke in her mindset of hate. Shes the kind of latino that thinks she knows better than her constiuency. In fact, like the other two people mentioned, she displays an arrogance that should be a point of disdain.

But, alas, most people as a whole are smart and usually dont fall for such stupidity. I mean, we just proved that two weeks ago in the pres. election that we can elect a brother into the highest office of the land. I say we've gone above and beyond MLKs dream, now its time to go further.

American_Patriot (anybody else wish this place ran like Slashdot and tagged unverified pseudonyms as "Anonymous Coward" - anyway) if you're going to anonymously publish an epic, please check your stats and have the same courtesy towards people that you would have NAACP shove down my throat.

One of these days just run through the list of dead from 9/11 through now in the civilian (cops/firefighters) and soldiers not desk jockeys. Take a peek at who in Texas are signing up during war to serve in the armed forces. Look at the color ONLY and then get back to me.

When people charge into a diatribe about the slave ships, Yeah, I wince, but I a was amazed to find out an interesting follow up to the the shame of slavery that never gets a fair intellectual reckoning. A major part of Lincoln's post war strategy was a paid repatriation for slaves and descendants. The Negro leaders of the day, with amazing prescience, foretold the hardships of civil rights (so much so, that I wish they were here to pick my Lotto numbers) but decided that the opportunities of America and its openness to immigrants in general far outweighed the slight advantage of physical re-assimilation. There was the political will and the funding to set them up pretty well somewhere else, but they were Americans. And they were signing up to build atop a sewer, an open cesspool! -- alongside the reviled Irish (yeah, the loathsome Roman Catholics that have only had one President despite speedy color-blind assimilation).

If you think America has peaked, then yeah. scramble for your crumbs. Otherwise keep a civil tongue and stop playing the Sophomore "my girl dumped me worse than your girl dumped you" drinking game of minority sacrifices. There are some Chinese kids that could drink you personally under the table and a load of Vietnamese that might give you a run for your money.

Wish I had a "group hug" to end on, but man -- If Callejo is a bigot just use the right word and move on. Keep the conversation focused on that.

Jason Rice, in ref to: "There are some Chinese kids that could drink you personally under the table and a load of Vietnamese that might give you a run for your money."

I doubt that at all! If you go to your local library or google the internet, you'll find more information proving that African Americans did MORE in building America than any other immigrant. Without question... Were the Chinese or Vietnamese captured and forced to undergo super-humen, sometimes fatal work ethic? The white indentured servants proved to lack the strength and endurance, the Native Americans refused to be enlslaved, thus enter the African American... Oh, and I failed to mention all of the significant "inventions" created by African Americans...many of them stolen or swindled for pennies.

Being in the U.S. Armed Forces, we get the demographics every year, and as I stated, African Americans make up more than their 14% American citizenry. Even though, as CNN Black in America proved, a white felon having served jail time will get the employment nod before an African Americaqn with 2 degrees...

All I'm saying is this, don't try to denegrate what we've done to make this country successful, and I've operated in or transited over 55 countries and no other compares, however, we're still no utopia, but probably the best thing going on this planet...

Sorry Pat, I forget there are no singular pronouns in race baiting. I meant you personally. My bad. Sorry. Oh, wait that's precisely what I did say. Didn't try to denegrate any group. Just you personally (yep, a character flaw I concede). Yep, my lineage probably had it made compared to yours... grampa had the cushy coal mine job. I'm glad you and I can both fight viciously from the comfort of air conditioning.

But please don't lecture me about denegrating a whole people after your flat out - yep - racist diatribe. (Yes, she's said worse, but two wrongs...)

Oh, and since I asked and it's all about race _ (which dammit! you seem like a smart guy/gal I'd rather argue with over lunch)

casualties
http://icasualties.org/oif/Ethnicity....

While I was surprised that it kinda looks skewed that your generalization of larger Black population would strongly outweigh the Hispanic casualties (10.x% to 9.x%), I have a feeling there's other data I don't have. Looks weird... or you're flat wrong. You probably have access to better data, so I defer.

Anyway, please take my insults personally so we can fight like civilized jerks rather than fanatical zealots.

As for inventions and ignorance - oddly enough, when I find a neat invention, it usually has a 10-15% chance of being a Black inventor. Weird, huh? (Not weird if real equality is possible, right? Basic, Lisp, C++, Linux - White guy, Lingo - Black guy) I was going to throw A/C up in your face as many years ago I read a Central American doctor came up with it (Hispanic) but - suspiciously, I keep finding a white guy credited with it. Conspiracy? Bad memory? Google deficit? Man I really wanted to clinch you with that one being Hispanic, but not yet. (get that whole peregrination/arch form going - rats!). Oh, well.

Attack on each other's wardrobe at 10 paces!

Anyway, please accept my personal insults as intended not as a broad racial smear. I don't have the white outfit for it and it's after Labor Day so I wouldn't be caught dead in it anyway.

Says 20% African American here! You're selling dehydrated water! ;) The diatribe you speak of is simply the facts! Like I said, visit your local library, google the internet, watch Roots, Rosewood, Men of Honor, Glory Road, Panthers, Amistad, The Tuskegee Airman, etc... Too many to name... Where are the docu-dramas or movies depicting the significance of other immigrant's contributions to America? Many Immigrants contributed, but not to the level of my race. That's why people fell to their knees when Barack Obama was elected as my Commander-In-Chief-elect, as did I... That's why even WHITE America is even astounded at the significance of this milestone, and were touched. As CNN reported during the moment, "Centuries for a race of people that arguably have done more in establishing this great country than any other!" And this was a white reporter! Righteous! Never voted for Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, but would die for Colin Powell or Barack Obama... Was gonna retire at 26, but will now dedicate my life to securing my country for at least President-elect Obama's first term...which will put me at 30...

Good morning American_Patriot, gosh I see all the posts from the last 24 hours! I saw you mentioned me as a POS,......I am not a POS. Wanna fight!? ;) Man I did not say anything bad about MLK, I just want the facts stated and to be realistic on this issue. He did not go around 24-7 planning to die, yes he did get killed but he did not walk around KNOWING he would die at any instant. He was better than that, MLK did not let anxiety rule his life. He was a spiritual man, in touch with GOD, those that are have faith and do not walk around scared all the time. He did not want to give his life for just that one cause, he had other things going on as well. And he was accomplishing them too! Calm down, you don't have a hater here man. Just a person who is very realistic and tells it like I see it.

Pat - you really underestimate the white awareness of your forebears plight. All the history I've seen since grade school is black history. Your list of inventions? Four Google results down is an equally impressive refutation by an obvious bigot with more time on their hands than I can imagine. I'm figuring a goodly percentage of both lists are true, but I also figure there's little else in the world I have no time for than point by point bicker... that being your goal. Nope.

So if 20% of the military is a demographic but only 10% of the casualties are, does that make you scratch your head or what? Like I said earlier. Not the desk jockeys. Do I begrudge someone a serious and rewarding career managing the behemoth of National Defense? Nope. Just don't throw up that number as "sacrifice." Your number is 10%.

The other 10% is patent "opportunity" which you are properly taking and hopefully going to make good use of. The military is an amazing place to build leadership. I work with some of the best and I think some of them might even share your melanin concentration. Never really bothered to check.

And be aware as you make these arguments that they are part and parcel of a standard barrage of hate and guilt we all grew up hearing. Yeah, I beat myself up through my 20's... accepting the silly inconsistencies like someone saying I was perfect for the project... "if only we didn't have so many white guys on it already." Sure it was fair in the larger sense so ya shrug.

But now that you have that wonderful line in the sand that truly you can tell your kids "anybody can be President," the down side comes that you have to move forward. Obviously its possible so some of this baggage has to go.

The first piece of baggage has to be the unassailable cry of "racists." When you make blatant bigoted statements like your initial attack on a whole people.... a whole PEOPLE... you better gird your loins for the same title you'd throw at me for a misplaced word or moment of confusion like calling someone "colored" or whatever term is out of vogue.

Hate me if that's your programming, but you know I'm right.

Yes the rules are different now.

Trust me, far more for you than for me. But you can do it.

He did many other, good and non-racial things to the betterment of our society. Not just for the blacks man. By the way, AND ON THE PUBLIC RECORD, I have fought for equal rights for all asians, hispanics, blacks, gays, homeless and regular whites over the years.
