Brian Sliter is running for mayor of Wilmer, Texas. He's also a registered sex offender, which combination of traits (mayoral candidacy and sex offender status) has made him the subject of national news.
It's not like he didn't know this would come up when he decided to run for office - he's even made his transgression a part of his official statement for candidacy (as detailed on the Wilmer Public Citizen blog).
As Sliter states: "In 2004, I was in an adult Internet chat room and chatted sexually with who I thought was a female two years under the legal age of consent and later attempted to meet. The detective I chatted with arrested me. I plead guilty."
According to Sliter, just as he has been held accountable for his behavior (a deferred adjudication allows him to legally run for office), city leaders of Wilmer (who he accuses of malfeasance in relationship to real estate development issues) should be held accountable for theirs.

Oh yes, real estate development is definitely on par with sexing up minors. Keep up the good work, Chester! I mean, Sliter!

I cant believe that a sex offender is running for anything.I am shocked. I believe that people can change but im sorry ,ive been molested too many times to believe that a molester will stop its from one to the other.Whats wrong with the ones that say he was set up or the encouraging him?COME ON . WHAT if it was your child? Would you take up for him then?GET a backbone .JAMES BRIAN SLITER SHOULD BE IN PRISON RUNNING FROM BIG BUBBA, NOT FOR MAYOR. I wouldnt elect him to pump out portable toilets.

Mel25, he's not running for middle school principal. Whether he likes having sex with people who are well past puberty but not yet of legal age doesn't really say anything about his ability to do whatever it is a mayor does (truly, I don't know.)
On the other hand, he's shown that he will engage in risky behavior and willingly ignore the law, so there is that...

Yeah, there's that whole blatant disregard for laws, trying to take advantage of girls not even old enough to have a driver's license, etc.
Don't most places have ordinances restricting registered sex offenders from having a home within X-distance of a school? Pretty safe to say he's not the best candidate for any public office.
Certainly an emotional first comment from mel25, regardless. Hope Sliter wasn't the one doing the molesting, otherwise we might have an assassination in the works.

Ok - This may be a stupid question but since when do they offer deferred adjudication to sex offenders? Isn't that sort of a legal oxy-moron?

Allen Gwinn says that there are discrepancies in Sliter's sex offender record:

Looks to me like the record itself is consistent, it's simply a botched address in the registry. East vs West.
Severely doubt that's going to affect his campaign or reputation, Miko. =)

Actually, if you look at his mailing address on the DCAD website it is in the Buckner area of Dallas. The property address is in Wilmer. Which one does he live at? Therefore, one should ask, is he out of compliance with the registration requirements and also possibly ineligible to run for mayor in Wilmer if he lives in Dallas?
