— A long-time Lewisville resident will receive keys to a new home Saturday, March 22 during open house from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 218 Birch St., thanks to a federal grant Lewisville received in 2005 to improve homes for the elderly and disabled.

The $335,000 Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs grant was earmarked specifically for renovating low-income homes that had significant structural damage or were too old to meet today’s building standards. Lewisville Housing Finance Corporation provided in-kind matching funds totaling $40,000. Six homes qualified to receive major renovations, with only one being structurally damaged enough to be demolished and rebuilt. The other five homes received structural repairs, energy-efficient windows and appliances, handicapped-accessible wide doors, showers and ramps. Old and worn water heaters and heating and air conditioning units were replaced, which should prevent costly repairs or renovations for the next five years.

This open house kicks off National Community Development Week for Lewisville which has used federal Community Development Block Grant funds to carry out housing, community development and social services programs for the past ten years.

“Quality of life is important for everyone,” said Mayor Gene Carey. “We are pleased to be able to help these families.”
