Some unexpected places closed on Easter Sunday in Dallas
DALLAS Do people not go shopping on Easter? A variety of businesses one might not expect to be closed are, in fact, closed. You'd think we were in the Bible Belt or something. Most malls are closed today including NorthPark Center, the Shops at Willow Bend, Stonebriar Centre (open: the restaurants, Sears, and Barnes & Noble), Galleria Dallas (open: Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, Grill on the Alley, Grand Lux Cafe, and Sushi Samba), Collin Creek Mall, Town East Mall, etc. etc. etc.
Bravo to the Premium Outlet Center in Allen for being open from 12 noon to 6 p.m.
But the biggest surprise of all is that Central Market is closed today "so that our Partners may celebrate Easter with their families", sez the Web site. Whole Foods is open, Tom Thumb is open, Kroger, Albertsons, all the markets are open, but not Central Market. Nothing against those Easter-celebrating families but why have a retail business if you're not going to be open? It's almost enough to make you want to boycott them, except that their hot cross buns are really good. Unfortunately they're not available for sale today when you need them.

Good for Central Market and I think it's quite refreshing that they opted out! The fact that they were closed today just makes me want to keep shopping there.
Kudos.

Opted out of ... serving customers?
I absolutely hate it when some stupid holiday means that I can't get something done. It's like Chick-Fil-A being closed on Sunday - it angers me.

Stupid holiday? (Holy Day)

Btw, you are free to go to those establishments that are open to serve your purposes.

And... I might remind all the Gentle Readers that I'm quite sure everyone was aware this Holiday was approaching and that there were at least seven days beforehand to get all their Central Market needs met before closure. This goes too for Chick-Fil-A.
What's wrong with getting a fried chicken sandwich Monday through Saturday?? DOH!

I'm with you Pavel. Although, I guess I should be glad that business owners still get to decide their own operating hours.
And what's with these federal holidays ? Those are just a major inconvenience for the majority of working folks who DON'T get that day off. (sorry, was going to go to Best Buy tonight and spend some of my income tax refund but they're closed)

Ya still know it's on the calendar and that "time out" is coming up so there's no excuse in not getting stuff done before or waiting till after.
I don't see why one would be upset over anyone else having time off...especially if it meant time with family, loved ones or friends for a special occasion.
Again, kudos to HEB!!!

LLM, I'm sure over 2.1 billion people pick their noses in public. Doesn't mean I have to do it or enjoy witnessing a dig. I can certainly understand why Easter's observance annoys people who aren't Christian.
I, however, made the best of a lazy Sunday and wasn't bothered at all by your celebration of some dude being buried a long time ago. If anything, I was pissed on Friday when I was at work and most of my friends didn't put pants on until after noon.

Lisa Lawrence Merritt, says:
Scott, you seemed to have missed a very important point about Easter: it isn't the "celebration of some dude being buried"; it's that the grave was empty and that nothing, not even death, can separate us for God's love.
And as a reminder, regardless of religious affiliation, any person has the right to take off from work to observe their faiths ceremonies.

lightsguy, says:
I'm not an overly religious guy, however, I fully support any business' right to close whenever they see fit. If a majority of the owners/employees of a business are Christian, then one would expect them to close on holidays such as Easter and Christmas.
Jewish owned businesses have every right to close on their major holidays.
Muslim owned businesses are free to close on their holidays.
Folks, this is America, and everyone is free to worship the religion they choose (or not choose.) If that religion means that you close on a Sunday, then you close on a Sunday. The owners of Chik-fil-a have a right to close on Sundays, if that bothers you, then don't shop there. Malls and Central Market have a right to close on Easter; if this bothers you then don't shop there as well.

James Scott, says:
And as I found out at the Spring Equinox / Full Moon MoonladyFest, Easter is not necessarily a Christian-only affair. According to these guys, this tradition of celebrating spring & new life & rebirth & all of that stuff has been going on for 4000+ years, so it doesn't have to be just about "some dude".
I'm not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination, and I have to admit when I pulled up to Super Target I was a little surprised and annoyed, but my partner pointed out that holidays like that are very few and far between, so I can chill out for one day without them being open (she used to be in retail). Think about the hell they go through for weeks and weeks dealing with the Christmas crowd and tell me they don't deserve one Sunday in the spring?

"if this bothers you then don't shop there" - it only bothers me when they're closed, at which time, it's pretty hard to shop there. I don't think anyone begrudges anyone else any time off. And besides, almost anything one could possibly need on Easter Sunday, can be acquired at Wal-Mart :-) (except maybe a chik-fil-a sandwich)

I obviously used 'some dude' to get a rise out of, well, pretty much anybody who would speak up.
LLM, that's a wonderful story.
Nobody's saying businesses can't close - I think people recognize the importance of time off for personal reasons, whatever they may be. That doesn't mean we can't moan and groan when we're inconvenienced, though. =p They're looking out for their interests, we're looking out for ours. Pretty sure that's the way it's been since the dawn of time.

Absolutely nothing. What's wrong with getting a fried chicken sandwich on Sunday? Apparently, fried chicken offends God 1/7th of the time.
"I don't see why one would be upset over anyone else having time off...especially if it meant time with family, loved ones or friends for a special occasion."
What if I hate my loved ones?
Bigdon: I support a business's right to close their doors whenever they see fit - it doesn't mean I can't also be pissed off when I CANNOT GET A CHICKEN SANDWICH ON A SUNDAY. And yeah, I don't shop there precisely because Sunday is the only time I ever want a chicken sandwich, and I refuse to support their mockery of my hunger.

The most legit reason for someone not shoping at any given store. The price is wrong for what you get and not because they choose to close on a given date.

There did seem to be more stores closed this Easter than I remember in years past. I only knew that Target would be closed because a friend's daughter works there and she had told me. I did my shopping for dinner prior to the day so I was not looking for groceries and such. I took my mother to the Kimbell. I had checked the website earlier in the week to make sure they were open. But, I'm a planner. My daughter thinks I do spontanous poorly.
I am most surprised at the meanness in some of the posted remarks. Perhaps we should all read the article "Frisco homeowners association feud spurs libel lawsuit". We are responsible for our remarks. I thinks sometimes people let loose on websites without thinking things through.
As a non-christian, I try to be understanding of those that have different beliefs from my own. I hope to receive the same respect from Christians.

There are civil actions for "defamation of character" that I have personally seen settlements in the thousands of dollars for statements less harsh than the ones made by Pavel. First - if someone were to sue me for a substantial sum for libel or defamation of character, I'd make sure they got their money's worth. I'm handy with photoshop and have shady associates who love to spread rumors.
Second - I don't think you can even be appointed a judge without knowing what sarcasm is. I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear, despite what certain baby-eating Hitler-worshipping satanists (who, I hear, cheat on their taxes and engage in unseemly erotic behavior with inanimate objects and livestock) may suggest during their breaks from stealing money from unwed mothers at homeless shelters.

bmslaw, obviously being able to go shopping on any given Sunday (omg football wat) is important enough to some people that they'll raise a stink. Unless you or some other grocery store superhero is going to start looking out for their interests, methinks you're wasting your precious keystrokes.
For you litigious folks seriously worried about libel, THAT'S childish.

And even if she were, or someone decided to sue Pavel -- anyone can file a suit. A suit with merit (or winnability) is a different animal altogether.

Miko, unfortunately people with money have more room to be crybabies than those who don't have thousands laying around. If someone files suit against you, you've gotta defend yourself to some extent regardless of how ridiculous the claim may be - and it can be costly.
Surely your main squeeze will vouch for that.

And in regards to the Sunday closing time, I do see Pavel's point: business that wants money should remain open. It was upsetting for me today to find out that the mall is closed because I wanted to buy some make-up...but, at the same time being closed for one day won't kill anyone. I should have done my shopping the day before. But... it is an inconvenient that I have to get up real early tomorrow to get my make-up before work. That, or go to work looking like crap. LOL.
