I remember I wasn't allowed to read The Giver in 3rd grade because it was too mature, but had to wait until 5th grade to read it. So it was to my surprise when I heard that a children's theater company was going to bring this work to the stage. Dallas Children's Theater, in keeping with their mission to bring provocative literature to the stage for young adults, will present The Giver from March 28 – April 20, 2008 and is recommended for youth, ages 11 and up.
Lois Lowry's book was the 1994 Newbery Medal winner of a science fiction fantasy classic, estimated to have sold more than 5.3 million copies. This innovative and provocative fantasy presents a deeply moving argument between balancing the values of freedom and security. Jonas leads a peaceful, “normal” life in a futuristic, utopian society. He, his two parents, and sister Lily appear to be a happy, healthy family. He enjoys riding his bicycle and playing with his friends, Asher and Fiona. In his society everything is regulated including family assignments, emotions, and employment, all to create a sense of “sameness”, tranquility and security.
When children turn the age of twelve, the community rulers and Chief Elder in the “Ceremony of the Twelves” assign every child a career. Since Jonas exhibits a quality known as the “Capacity to See Beyond” he is assigned the very rare and important position in the community: the next Receiver of Memory. Jonas begins to study with the Giver, who telepathically transfers the history and sense memory of the whole world to Jonas. Among many things Jonas has never experienced before, he faces physical pain, war, beauty, love and great happiness. Meanwhile, Jonas’ father, a Nurturer of new children, is having trouble with a newborn named Gabriel. Jonas bonds with the baby and helps him sleep by transferring pleasant memories to him. When Jonas learns that the baby’s fate is in danger, he begins to question the rules that govern his people. His world begins to crumble as he comes to understand “release”. Jonas must make a life changing decision that could alter his society and his life forever.
