MCKINNEY The American Cancer Society Relay For Life (RFL) McKinney will paint McKinney purple with a rally on March 29 at 11:30 a.m. on the north steps of the McKinney Performing Arts Center, 111 N. Tennessee Street, in Historic Downtown McKinney. The rally is free and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to wear purple.
"Purple is the official color of Relay For Life, and through Relay, you experience something called 'The Power of Purple,'" said RFL McKinney Co-Chair Sharon Laird. "You see lives changed when you invite others to join Relay for the first time, know the sense of victory when someone who has battled cancer walks their first Survivor Lap and never forget the emotion of placing a luminaria bag for someone you love."
Through the Paint The Town Purple rally, RFL McKinney hopes to communicate "the power of purple" to area residents and kick off April as Relay For Life Month in McKinney.
"We encourage everyone in the community, from current Relay volunteers and team members to cancer survivors to anyone who’s life has been touched by cancer, to wear purple on March 29 and come to the rally," said McKinney RFL Co-Chair B.J. Ray. "If you’ve never participated in RFL before but are curious about what it’s like, this rally will give you a glimpse of the incredible spirit of Relay."
The rally will include a reading of the official proclamation declaring April Relay For Life month in McKinney, stories from cancer survivors and speeches from RFL McKinney participants and committee members. Committee members will also be on hand to answer questions and register new teams for McKinney’s Relay. Purple ribbons will be distributed to anyone who would like to place one on the door of their business or home during the month of April to show support for RFL.
Anyone who is interested in registering a team but cannot attend the rally should contact Suzanne Smith at ssmith@mckinneyisd.net.
RFL McKinney will be held April 25, 2008 at the Ballfields at Craig Ranch. For more information on how to participate in or contribute to McKinney RFL, register a team or purchase a luminaria, visit the Web site or call 214-695-6154.
