Al Copeland, 64, the New-Orleans-born founder of the Popeyes chicken chain as well as Copeland's of New Orleans, died on Sunday March 23 in Germany. According to the NY Times, he had a malignant tumor in his salivary gland.

He started out poor and lived flamboyantly: elaborate weddings, gaudy Christmas decorations, Rolls-Royces, Lamborghinis, Jaguars, speedboats, fistfights with business rivals, etc. At one point, he owned the Church's chicken chain, which he eventually lost after filing for bankruptcy.

A branch of his Copeland's opened in Southlake last year.
