Week in View: No Fooling Edition

Farmers Branch asked landlords for information to keep undocumented residents out of town, contrary to a federal ruling. Whoops! Barack Obama's longtime pastor backed out of this weekend's Black Church Summit sponsored by TCU's Brite Divinity School. Erin reports on the dirty business of vehicle emissions inspectors. Grits for Breakfast follows the fall of Rockwall's D.A.. For those concerned about regional public safety, you'll be glad to know Denton got federal funds for a new training facility, and Farmers Branch police are seeking grant funding for a mobile storefront command.

Music seen

The world premiere of Neil Young's Greendale opens in Deep Ellum this weekend with some of Dallas' most accomplished musicians accompanying the show. It's no joke: Chuck D will be in Dallas on April Fool's Day (but Flavor Flav will not), for the screening of a documentary about Public Enemy during AFI Dallas. We've got video of recent Granada performances by Gogol Bordello and the Stratoblasters. PPT released a new video of a song from their last recording. We also report from Amsterdam (the Bar, not the Dutch capital) about the Bad Ass Jazz Night with Shelley Carrol every Monday.

Dining

Just say "Hola" to a sherbet comeback. The slightly tarnished, still high-profile James Beard Award nominees include a handful of Dallas restaurants. Members of the Mia's family are moving down Lemmon. A Dallasite who blogs about wine has also been nominated for two national awards.

The Biz

Attn: Michael Moore: not all healthcare companies are raking in obscene profits. Mannatech's finally tying up some legal loose ends. Dallas Progress reports on the closure of an Oak Cliff business at least half as classy and twice as dangerous as a Motel 6. Bennigan's is now open in the Bahamas. Also, on April 1, Pizza Hut is changing its name — no foolin'.

Flix

Last week, in addition to making a little film of his own (while peering out the waist gunner's port of a B-17), film guy John posted reviews of new releases Married Life and Shutter, along with a review of a creepy low-budget German/Romanian film on DVD, Them. And he finished up some SXSW business by giving us a rundown on a disturbing little indie pic called A Necessary Death. For the next 10 days John will be experiencing as much of the excitement of the AFI Dallas International Film Festival as he can, and - of course - sharing it with you.
