Central 214 at Hotel Palomar giving away samples from spring menu and cheap prices on wine

34

Central 214, the restaurant at Hotel Palomar in Dallas, is offering free samples and low wine prices to attract customers during the beginning of the week.

Chef Tom Fleming has a new spring menu described as "highlighting the freshest ingredients available". This is a smart approach to a menu. Highlighting non-fresh ingredients seems like it would turn diners off. You don't see many successful restaurants touting a menu that's all old stuff, or an entire meal composed of canned goods, or "we've got the stalest food in town." On top of that, Central 214 seems to be going the extra distance, offering not just "fresh" ingredients, but the freshest. It evokes an image of, say, peas shucked straight from the pod. Cheese recently churned. Chickens being slaughtered right behind the hotel, out by the dumpster probably, around the corner from the valet stand.

On Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Fleming will host "Taste of 214" in the bar and lounge area, showcasing the new menu items made from the freshest ingredients and giving guests an opportunity to try bites gratis, which means "free".

On Mondays from 5 to 10 p.m., the restaurant features 10 wines for $21.40 per bottle, from a list of "exclusive new world boutique wines" that change upon availability.

Hi T.G. I'm curious from under what shoe you scraped your personality? This is the most pathetic, sarcastic, low class writing style I have ever seen. Your lack of self respect and misery is about the only thing you manage to convey in this article. Junior High writing courses are not sufficient for professional journalism. You might want to explore gaining at least a speck of character and knowledge about the food industry. What a joke! You lower the standards of Pegasus News. Best stick with what you know. I'll be keeping an eye out for you at the dumpster.

ocean, you don't happen to be involved with Central 214 in any manner, do you? This being your first comment after signing up today doesn't exactly lead me to believe that you're objectively critiquing TG's critique.

Speaking of writing styles: "Your lack of self respect and misery is..." What high-level English courses have you been taking? I thought TG showed plenty of misery!

Oh, my guess...It was the Chef, with the cheese churner (?), in the dumpster.

OMG - this whole exchange is so funny. The original story, the reaction from ocean, who is obviously connected to the restaurant, and, finally, Gubbins' comment to ocean, including that hilarious link. Good, funny stuff.

bill h., who could resist chuck taylors? people have told me they're quite versatile ... can be worn to church, the theater, playing racquetball, client meetings, and so on. of course, not everyone can get away with all of that

It's great to read you here now.

I never understood all the angst over Law Reviewers. If their hijinks are so disagreeable, just don't read the reviews. Did they slap your first born in public or something? Christ, get over it.

Scott Doyle says:

Ones made for walkin'. Couldn't tell you what brand - bought 'em a couple years ago at an outlet store in Seattle (sale ftw!) and haven't looked back. Had to replace the soles a couple of months ago, and brand name's been rubbed off the insert.

I save like a chinaman; certainly don't blow $21.40 on one bottle of wine. Spending habits in this country kill me on the inside, and talk of bailing out morons who borrow 10x their salary at an adjustable rate makes me want to break things since they'll probably be eating at Central 214 on a credit card that's almost maxed out.

Needless to say, chumps getting up in arms b/c someone exercises common sense regarding their frou-frou restaurant doesn't sit well with Doyle.

Nice little thread we've got here.

Well, a nice list of masterful commentary. Your reactions have led me to explore what possibly could have brought on my spiteful blurb. What do I have to offer the Dallas dining scene but my occasional silent appreciation of a good experience? But TG has power and a heartwarmingly loyal following to impact. I have long resented critics' need to write a pack-a-punch commentary on a subject they obviously haven't explored with any vigor. What's the point of writing a sarcastic story on a restaurant? I was excited to return to Dallas recently and find that it has a new energy and culture about it. I wish it had the criticism to either back it or oppose it with depth.

yay, ocean is back! welcome back to dallas and to Pegasus News. where'dya go?

this item wasn't an "original story" - it was a press release sent out to a bunch of food writers. i could've ignored it altogether, as most recipients did; but i like central 214 and hoped they might benefit from a mention.

however, to post the press release verbatim seemed unimaginative, mindless, dull. so i added some "zest". that's what makes Pegasus News special. you won't get zest from the other guys

may i suggest that you post some reviews of restaurants where you've eaten? maybe a nice writeup of Central 214
