Sly old folks BJ and Ken Middaugh, members of "Rowlett Rockers", hoodwink Rowlett Donuts employee Cindy Shin into handing over donuts for free.
For several years, Rowlett Donuts, a local donut shop located at Rowlett Road and SH 66, provides several dozen donuts to senior group "Rowlett Rockers" as a gesture of kindness and community support.
Every Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m., the Rowlett Rockers wait patiently for several familiar white rectangle boxes to arrive at the Rowlett Community Centre so they can get their day started on a sweet note.
Sue Cho, owner of Rowlett Donuts, and her brother Sean Cho manage the little shop and admit that "we get a lot of pleasure" out of providing the donuts to the Rowlett Rockers and will continue to do so as long as the group desires. She said they get a lot of appreciation from the seniors for very little effort and it’s their way way of "giving back to the community in a small way."
Ken Middaugh, Chairman of the Rowlett Senior Advisory Board, and member of Rowlett Rockers, said the Rockers' group is also very appreciative of the weekly donation.
"We enjoy gathering as a group once a week to play games, fellowship, meet new people and network," Middaugh said. "We would have to spend quite a bit of money to feed everyone breakfast every week, so Rowlett Donuts is very kind to offer the donuts for our gatherings. Donuts, good friends and a great place to meet are a wonderful way to start the day!"
The Rowlett Community Center is located on the extreme east end of Main Street in Rowlett and offers meeting space, recreation classes, a fully equipped work out facility and two full-size gymnasiums. The center not only caters to young people, but also the young at heart, like the Rowlett Rockers.
"We love having the Rowlett Rockers meet here because they are the root of our community and represent what Rowlett is all about," said Jennifer Robertson, Rowlett Assistant Recreation Superintendent. "When local businesses partner with us to enhance the experience of being at the Community Centre, we all benefit."
