Arlington Police Department to hold Safer Arlington for Everyone events

Starting this weekend, the Arlington Police Department will host Safer Arlington for Everyone (S.A.F.E.) 2008 in the area in and around The Parks at Arlington and the Arlington Highlands on three consecutive Saturdays. All events are free and open to the public and include prizes and fun, educational activities for all ages. The schedule of Saturday events is as follows:

May 3: Bicycle Rodeo and Safety Fair, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Parking lot of Spaghetti Warehouse, 1100 W. Arbrook Blvd.

Arlington police officers will teach bicycle safety and conduct a bicycle skills course. All children, especially those ages 8 to 11, are invited to bring a bicycle, a helmet, and their parents for a fun day for the whole family. Children who complete the bicycle safety course will be awarded a bicycle safety license and other free prizes donated by local businesses. The event includes free bicycle giveaways from Toys R Us, bicycle safety inspections by Bikes Inc., child fingerprinting, bicycle etching, and displays from Arlington police officers, firefighters and ambulance providers. CareFlite will also land a helicopter in the parking lot.

May 10: Vehicle Burglary Prevention & Community Education, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: Inside The Parks at Arlington, Barnes and Noble interior courtyard.

Learn how to minimize your chances of becoming the victim of a vehicle crime. Includes displays on vehicle burglary prevention. Participants can enter the S.A.F.E. Car Contest and test their crime prevention skills by identifying the crime concerns of a display vehicle. Those with a keen crime eye who find the major safety concerns will be entered into a drawing for several great prizes donated by several generous businesses. Outside, Tarrant Regional Auto Theft Crimes Unit members will etch VIN numbers on vehicles for free.

May 17: Bicycle Rodeo and Safety Fair, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Arlington Highlands, Market Square, 4000 Arlington Highlands Blvd.

The Arlington Police Department, Arlington Parks and Recreation and the Arlington Highlands are hosting a family event focused on promoting health awareness and personal safety. Children can participate in several physical activities, including a golf putting green, a fly fishing demonstration, jump rope, and hula hoop contest. Several Arlington officers and volunteer organizations will be represented at this event as well as Arlington Fire/E.M.S. and members of the U.S. Military. A variety of youth organizations will have informational displays. All children who complete the Health and Safety activity card will be entered into a drawing to win great prizes donated by our local business community.
