— Little Kids Rock, a charity that promotes music education in public schools, donated guitars and amplifiers to teachers at 31 Dallas ISD schools. Each music teacher will receive up to 30 acoustic guitars, and classroom teachers participating in the program will receive up to 10 acoustic guitars each.

Before the schools can receive the guitars, 34 teachers at the schools attended Little Kids Rock workshops on teaching students how to play the instrument. Both classroom teachers and music teachers who know how to play the guitar are participating in the program.

The students at Pleasant Grove Elementary School were the first Dallas ISD students to receive the guitars. School principal Ellen Perry, music teacher Daniel Tippol, and 30 students received the first shipment on Feb. 19.

Elaine Thomas, director of Fine Arts, said the program provides excellent enrichment to music programs at district schools, reaching students that otherwise might never experience playing a guitar.

Funding for the Dallas ISD Little Kids Rock program was provided by Dean Guitars, a memorial auction and concert for Darrell Abbott, a gift from the Hot Topic Foundation, and additional support from Marshall Amplification. The Little Kids Rock donation valued at $90,000 includes workshops, curriculum, and guitars and their cases.
