Dallas marijuana supporters to rally on Saturday
Joining protesters in over 200 cities worldwide, activists from across the metroplex will gather in downtown Dallas this Saturday, May 3rd to participate in the 2008 Global Marijuana March, calling for the legalization of marijuana and promoting the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Hosted by the Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, the event is scheduled to begin with a brief rally at 12:00 p.m. outside the Earle Cabell Federal Building, followed by a march through downtown towards The Grassy Knoll.
"We're protesting laws that turn responsible adults and patients suffering from serious illness into criminals," said DFW NORML President Ryan Rodriguez, adding that current laws waste financial resources and fill jails with "non-violent" drug users.
Established three years ago, DFW NORML has seen a steady growth in membership and public participation in the organization's activities since the chapter's formation in 2005. This marks Dallas' third year of participation in the global event, which began in 1999.
In a brief telephone interview, Mr. Rodriguez said he expected over 200 supporters to attend the event, citing last year's turnout of approximately 150 persons and a growing trend of increased public tolerance across in the city and within the State of Texas.
The rally is scheduled to end in the afternoon; Members of the public are invited to a free concert later in the evening at The Bar of Soap (21 and up) beginning at 10:30 p.m.
There will be no street closures or detours affecting commuters or public transit corridors downtown.

Chris Olson, says:
So we know where Josh Howard will be this Saturday. At home, getting high. He don't need no laws to smoke.
But I give the hippies some props for not shutting down traffic. Even though it's never affected me, I hate it when protesters close streets to voice stuff everyone already knows.

Rick Yost, says:
If I thought I could physically handle the walking, I'd be there. There are far too many responsible individuals in prison right now for no more than trying to catch a buzz. They're not dealers, they're not all bad people. But since they made the mistake of using the dreaded weed, they are labeled criminals. It's a stupid thing, and the laws should be changed.
And for those who say that it's the dealers who benefit from the individuals mischief, then individuals should be allowed to grow small amounts of the naturally occurring plants for their own consumption- putting a serious hurt on the dealers.
Of course most of America still relies on prescription drugs to relieve their stress, and ease their pain, benefiting the pharmaceutical companies- the other drug dealers. But of course they'd lose a lot of business if Marijuana was made legal- and I'm sure we can't have that!

Robert Kelly, says:
The rally actually starts at 1, but they said noon since they know all the attendees will be late. :)
I absolutely agree with Rick on all points, I have long thought that there should be a study where you put 100 drunk people in a small area, then put 100 high people in the same space, and see where you have more problems. But one is legal and one not so much. Well, maybe in my lifetime....

"Put 100 high people in the same place": it's called an Incubus concert.
Is it 4:20 yet?

Now that I think of it- I should borrow a grocery basket from Urban Market, fill it with twinkies, and sell 'em for a buck a piece. I'd make a killin'.
Yes, of course I'll take the basket back. Sheesh!
