Texas Woman University schedules spring commencement May 10

DENTON — Approximately 1,471 students, the largest graduating class in Texas Woman’s University history, will receive degrees Saturday, May 10 during ceremonies scheduled for 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. on the Denton campus.

Commencement ceremonies include students from TWU’s Denton, Dallas and Houston campuses. Approximately 802 undergraduate and 669 graduate degrees will be awarded during the three ceremonies.

Student and family members who have tickets are invited to attend. Ceremonies will take place in the Kitty Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall, located on Bell Avenue. Receptions hosted by TWU Chancellor Ann Stuart will follow each ceremony on the second floor of the Student Union, located on the southwest corner of Bell Avenue and Administration Drive.

The 9 a.m. ceremony is for candidates in the College of Professional Education and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. State Rep. Dan Branch of Dallas (District 108) will deliver the commencement address.

The noon ceremony is for the College of Nursing and the College of Health Sciences (minus the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders). State Rep. Tan Parker of Flower Mound (District 63) is the speaker for the ceremony.

The 3 p.m. ceremony is for the College of Arts and Sciences. Eva Poole, director of libraries for the City of Denton and a TWU alumna, will deliver the commencement address.

Chancellor Stuart will preside at each ceremony.

The 3 p.m. ceremony will also feature the awarding of an honorary doctoral degree in dance to Ann Williams, founding artistic director of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Williams earned her master’ degree in dance from TWU in 1968 and is a former member of the university board of regents. She was named a TWU Distinguished Alumna in 1990. Williams was inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame in 2002, and was honored at The Kennedy Center in 2005 as part of its Masters of African-American Choreography series.
