Riff Raff: Odds and ends in local music news (April 27 - May 3)
New records to take note of
Cody Jinks and his exceptionally long and luscious hair are coming out with a new album in the next month, Cast No Stones. According to the country musician, his band has been testing out the new tunes in live performances recently and the art work is underway. As if that was exciting news, Jinks has also had some success on the country music charts recently... in Germany. One fears to think what German country music actually sounds like.
Remember Jackopierce? They'll be coming out with a record sometime this summer, as well. Want more info? Yeah, me too.
Kessler, on the other hand, has once again pushed back the release of their album to the first week in July. According to a blog post, their label, YMA, has changed the marketing strategy for the album. Christian radio or mainstream radio? Christian or mainstream? OMG, how about both? Delay.
Dia de los let's name a concert after us
The Toadies are putting together a yearly concert that they've titled Dia De Los Toadies. The first annual self-proclaimed Spanish holiday goes down on August 31 at (where else?) Possum Kingdom Lake. Tickets went on sale Friday morning, but unlike the limited access of their upcoming Ridglea show, which sold out in 45 minutes, tickets are still on sale for DdlT at Frontgate Tickets. Also on the lineup are the Lions, Dove Hunter, The Backsliders, and the Tejas Brothers. For all the Toadies fans out there, sure we make fun, but we sincerely like the Toadies. But you gotta admit, naming a concert the day of my band... come on.
Band additions
Redefine has finally filled the bassist slot vacated by Dave Spinks. They welcome Mike DiQuinzio, formerly of Proofed and Dark Seraf) fame. Well, I suppose it's fame if you've heard of those two bands before.
Speaking of low, deep chords, The Horrifics' current bassist will be playing his last show with the band on Saturday, May 3 in Waco. The new bassist is Trey Harn of Denton metal band, Their Eyes Were Shut Forever. From Boo Gruesome's blog comes the following explanation, "Known in some circles as T$ Billionaire, he will henceforth NECROmance the midNiGHT hours with the HORRiFiCS as the sinister T-ViRUS." Which virus specifically, however? I've heard that retroviruses are particularly sinister.
Getting a taste
The Timeline Post has posted two new songs to their site player to preview Saturday night's show at Andy's Bar in Denton. "No End in Sight" follows their formula of the epic, inclining instrumentals into sweeping vocals, but "Reverse the Curse" starts right off with heavy guitar and punk-like drums, breaking into the vocals quickly. Check them both out here.
