The Catholic Foundation invites all professional North Texas artists to submit their artwork for the Third Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition. The deadline for entries is 3:00 p.m., Friday, August 15, 2008.

The winning work will be selected by a panel comprised of highly respected members of the local arts community and will be announced and unveiled in October. The winner will receive a $1,000 stipend and have their artwork displayed on a wall in The Catholic Foundation Plaza for approximately one year. Four runners-up will receive $250 each.

“As the Dallas Arts District continues to grow and change, The Catholic Foundation is excited to contribute to our city’s public art experience through this competition. We look forward to showcasing the talents of one of our local North Texas artists,” said Edwin M. Schaffler, President and CEO of The Catholic Foundation. “Each year, the competition and the winning artwork serve to enhance the vision The Catholic Foundation had for the Plaza - drawing people there to enjoy the space and relax amongst the art, fountain and greenery.”

The Catholic Foundation Plaza is a 3,900-square-foot public space at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe and was dedicated in 2006. Featuring a 28-foot-long by 9-foot-wide Art Wall, the Plaza is located in the heart of the Dallas Arts District across from the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The Art Wall currently displays last year’s winning piece entitled “Trumpeting Angles” by Ann Cushing Gantz.

Professional artists living in the North Texas area are invited to submit proposal designs for consideration to be transferred to a vinyl-type surface which will be installed on the Art Wall. The work must be in keeping with the location of the Plaza on the Cathedral grounds but does not require a religious theme.

Chartered in 1955, The Catholic Foundation has dedicated its resources to compassionate charitable giving through grants provided by benefactors through its many planned giving programs. The Foundation has been able to provide more than $21 million through hundreds of grants to various religious, educational and charitable organizations within the Diocese of Dallas during its 50 plus years of existence.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
