Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and City Council are plotting to make convention center hotel a city project
In a mostly closed-door session on Tuesday, Mayor Tom Leppert and a majority of the members of the City Council have came up with a plan to have the city of Dallas own and operate the controversial convention center hotel they're hot-hot-hot to build.
They've convinced themselves that Dallas' convention center will suffer unless they have a hotel nearby. And they're making these decisions behind closed doors.
Council member Mitchell Rasansky called it "absolute insanity"; he and Angela Hunt are the only two who have offered objections, but both have been silenced or sidelined.
On May 14, the council will vote to spend approximately $42 million to buy the land. On June 16, they'll choose a developer from among four candidates. Then they'll come with a plan to build and operate the hotel, and vote to sell revenue bonds to fund it.
