The Miller Speech and Hearing Clinic at Texas Christian University - as an inducement to encourage folks to make hearing tests a part of their annual health check-up routine - is offering free hearing screenings in observance of Better Hearing and Speech Month.

The screenings are being offered on a reservation basis on Tuesday, May 20 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Miller Speech and Hearing Clinic (3305 W. Cantey). To RSVP, call 817-257-7620.

According to associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Helen Morrison, "hearing loss affects one out of ever four persons over the age of 60 and increases to one out of three over age 70. With noise exposure - video games, stereos - noise-related hearing loss is appearing as early as school age. Even minimal loss has been demonstrated to affect language development and school performance.”

TCU has offered a free hearing clinic for the past 17 years; last year, 25 percent of those participating were found to have some sort of hearing problem.

The 30-minute screenings (available to adults and children four and older) consist of a 15-minute evaluation followed by a 15-minute counseling session to explain test results. The screenings will be conducted by TCU grad students and supervised by American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA)-certified audiologists.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info
