Inevitable Theatre Company announces 2008-09 production season
Inevitable Theatre Company proudly follows up its award-winning 2007-08 inaugural season with a dynamic selection of music and madness in 2008-09, including the area premieres of two cutting-edge plays and the world premiere concert reading of a new alt-rock musical.
The 2008-09 season is as follows:
- Striking 12: The Groovelily Musical by Brendan Milburn, Valerie Vigoda, and Rachel Sheinkin. From December 4 - 20, 2008 at Bath House Cultural Center. A minimalist holiday musical that fuses rock, jazz, and musical theatre with a contemporary story about a man who must work late on New Year’s Eve, but an unexpected visit from a bohemian light bulb seller causes his holiday malaise to melt away as the snow begins to fall on a new year. Integrated into this urban narrative is the Hans Christian Andersen classic story, “The Little Match Girl,” which springs to life around the “Grumpy Guy” as he reflects on the spirit of the season. Playbill.com called the sold-out New York run of Striking 12 “the best musical that nobody has ever heard of,” and The New York Times compared its infectious “first rate score” and theatrical innovation to that of Spring Awakening. This production is appropriate for family audiences 12 and up. TEXAS PREMIERE.
- The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler by Jeff Whitty. From May 14 - 30, 2009 at Bath House Cultural Center. A side-splitting free-for-all of literary and pop culture references by the author of the irreverent smash Broadway musical Avenue Q. Every morning, Ibsen’s tragic heroine Hedda awakes in Limbo with a splitting headache; no wonder, she’s just shot herself in the head the night before. As she discovers the horrible (and hilarious) truth about herself, she is joined by Mammy (yes, that Mammy, from Gone with the Wind), Medea, two gay characters from the iconic 1960s play The Boys in the Band, and a collection of bickering Jesuses, among others, on a raucous yet poignant quest to end to her cyclical existence. Contains adult language and situations. AREA PREMIERE.
- Gordon: A Barenaked Musical by Robert Neblett and Barenaked Ladies. Summer 2009 and specific dates and venue TBA. A concert reading of a new musical-in-progress, based upon the musical catalog of the Canadian alt-rock band, Barenaked Ladies. It follows the story of a modern Everyman haunted by a crime of passion which destroys the one thing he loves most in the world. Gordon is full of love, laughter, suspense, real green dresses, and boxes and boxes of Kraft Dinner. Robert Neblett and Inevitable Theatre Company have received official permission from BNL’s management to create this project. This concert reading is a developmental prelude to a world premiere full production in 2009-10. WORLD PREMIERE.
Inevitable is currently accepting applications for all design and technical support positions within the season, as well as for musicians to serve as band members for Striking 12 and Gordon.
In addition to these three works, Producing Artistic Director Robert Neblett anticipates that Inevitable will also produce 2-3 staged readings by emerging playwrights as part of its new OnBook New Play Development Initiative, as well as submitting entries to the 2009 Out of the Loop Festival at WaterTower Theatre and 2009 Festival of Independent Theatres at the Bath House Cultural Center.
