2008 Irving election results

Two school board positions were also up for grabs.

These guys are about as entrenched as Mayor Herbert Gears. (Well, maybe not quite.)

These guys are about as entrenched as Mayor Herbert Gears. (Well, maybe not quite.)

Residents of the Irving voted on Sat. (May 10) to determine whether entrenched (and handsomely funded) incumbent mayor Herbert Gears could be unseated by either of his upstart challengers. Both Roland Jeter and Rigoberto Reza considered it worth a try.

Running for city council Place 3 were incumbent Allan Meagher and challenger Nancy Rivera, while the Place 5 race found incumbent Rose Cannaday squaring off against Sue Richardson.

Money-wise, Gears, Meagher and Cannaday had the clear edge.

Meanwhile, running for Irving School Board Place 1 were Stacey Ponce, Gina Bates and Nancy Jones, while School Board Place 2 pitted A.D. Jenkins against Jorge Alfonso Chac, II.

And the (unofficial, uncanvassed) votes are in: Gears will win the mayor's race with 5319 votes (54%) against 3736 votes (38%) for Jeter and 781 votes (8%) for Reza. In City Council Place 3, Allan Meagher defeats Nancy Rivera by a count of 6758 (75%) to 2246 (25%). In Place 5, Rose Cannaday outdrew Sue Richardson by a count of 5337 (56%) to 4214 (44%). For School Board Place 1, Nancy Jones comes out the winner, grabbing 4013 votes (51% of the total) compared to 2532 (32%) for Gina Bates and 1322 (17%) for Stacey Ponce. In School Board Place 2 results, A.D. Jenkins handily defeats Alfonso Chac, II by a count of 6274 (82%) to 1401 (18%).

Your article suggests that Gears and Cannaday were elected based on better funding. Perhaps it was based on issues. My mailbox regularly received information from all 4 of the candidates in the 2 hotly contested races, and the candidates who lost the election were consistently negative and hateful, engaging in some of the nastiest mudslinging I've ever seen in this community. There is no way I would have ever voted for either of them, in fact their vitriol inspired me to donate to their opponents. That's the first time I've ever written a check to support a local candidate. Irving does not need hateful people at the helm, and I'm very glad they were defeated.
