This year, the city of Mesquite saw a slew of close-ish races, but one reeaally close one.

Nine candidates played musical chairs for three Mesquite City Council positions, while incumbent mayor John Monaco battled against former councilman John Heiman.

The results:

  • With 55.26% of the vote in a three-way race, Greg Noschese secured his spot for City Council Place 4.
  • Shirley Roberts, incumbent City Council Place 5, disposed of challenger Michael Dougan by winning 72.21% of the vote.
  • Incumbent Mesquite Mayor John Monaco retained his position with 58.83% of the vote, meaning a little less than half of the city preferred his opponent John Heiman. Either way, Mesquite was set for a white John in office.
  • Finally, the incredibly-close four-way race for City Council Place 2 resulted in a .54% lead for Al Forsythe. Yes, Al received 31.66% of the vote, while his opponent Bill Metzger received 31.12%. Wheeew. That was 1,002 for Forsythe versus 985 votes for Metzger. However, since neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote, this race will be decided on June 14 in a runoff election.

Both Candidates for mayor were running for office on a policy of who could sell out Mesquite Citizens interests the fastest.

I find it fascinating that cities like Mesquite always assume that "more business, more population", is the answer to everything. It never seems to occur to these liiile martinets that perhaps some people might want to live in Mesquite because it isn't Dallas? Cost cutting and efficiency never seem to be solutions that anyone considers when managing a city. Perhaps that explains the absurdly high number of "families" that all seem to have jobs with the City of Mesquite. In Dallas, one can understand how corruption and incompetence has allowed the City to become the regions largest employer. With a city like mesquite though, its hard to understand how we can have so many people on the public payroll, all with so little to do, save for harass citizens. If any sane person actually ever runs for mayor of our town he can't possibly win because city employee's will never vote against their own self interests. Tax payers are merely sheep.

Friday Night Films with AFI Dallas "If you build it, they will come" ... could've described Ray Nasher's vision for NorthPark and his sculpture center, or Lenier Temerlin and Michael Caine's desire to start a local AFI festival. The two team up for an all-American screening of Field of Dreams in the Dallas Arts District. Or there's always fireworks. More info
