Around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13th, the University of Texas at Arlington will conduct the first test of its new Outdoor Warning System.

How the system works.

How the system works.

The test — which will be heard campuswide through strategically placed loudspeakers — will consist of a combination of sirens, chimes, prerecorded announcements, and live announcements, designed to allow emergency management staff to test the protocol, audio levels, clarity and reach of the system.

No actions are required by anyone in the campus community during this test.

The Outdoor Warning System was installed in January 2008 as a means of providing immediate, campuswide notification and instructions in the event of an imminent threat to public safety. The system was activated for the first time on April 17, when a major storm and tornadoes moved through North Texas.

Future tests of the Outdoor Warning System will be conducted on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:30 p.m.
