TCU’s Investor Challenge nets hard cash scholarships for talented virtual portfolio investors

Did the winning entrants engage in more than a crapshoot? (I'm guessing "yes.")

Some investing methods work better than others.

Some investing methods work better than others.

Once again in 2008 (for the fifth consecutive year), Texas Christian University's Neely School of Business sponsored a High School Investor Challenge, this time opening the competition to students outside the state of Texas.

Starting last summer when the participants (52 in total) spent a week on campus, each student had until April of this year to invest a virtual portfolio of $100,000. In April, they presented their results.

Receiving scholarships (totaling $178,500) for the performance of their investment portfolios were Kevin Able of Kansas; Blake Asjes of Missouri; John Bicknell of Louisiana; Brian Ford, Clay Holshouser, Garrett Isbell, Hayley Netherton, Kalie Presti, Carlos Reyes-Garcia, Lauren Rogers, Caroline Thompson, John Thompson and James Walsh of Texas; William Vonderfecht of Nebraska; and Andrew Yoder of Colorado.

Presumably, these kids actually did some P/L and corporate leadership research instead of just using the dartboard approach or casting runes.
