— A variety of new programs will be offered for teens ages 12–18 at the Lively Pointe Youth Center, a state-of-the-art facility scheduled to open early this summer.

Such programs include creative writing and poetry, jewelry, beads, T-shirt design, geocaching, scrapbooking, Guitar Hero, intramural basketball leagues, life skills and art. Teen Jams, a time when teens can socialize with their peers, will continue twice a month and also will be held at other recreation centers. Teens can dance to a disk jockey, play in basketball tournaments, enjoy games and eat free pizza.

The 23,000-square-foot facility includes a gymnasium, classrooms, computer lab, theater room, game room, cantina, lounge area, fitness center and two multi-purpose activity rooms. The $1.6 million project was funded through a 1999 bond program. The facility will be available for youth and teen activities after school and on weekends. During the day it will house the Adult Therapeutic Program.

Due to its close proximity to the skate park, the new teen center also will allow for better supervision of daily activities and special events at the skate park.

During the summer, hours of operation will be from 1 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The facility is located at 909 O’Connor Road across from Irving High School. For more information, call (972) 721-2501.
