Metal thefts spurring legislation by DFW cities

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (4)

Several DFW-area cities are trying to make life harder for metal thieves by passing or considering ordinances that would place tougher restrictions on the resale of metals.

Mesquite passed an ordinance on metal sales recently, and Dallas and Garland are both considering similar ordinances. Dallas' ordinance would require recycling companies to pay customers with mailed checks, not cash, and would also require customers to submit thumbprints and digital photos when selling their metal.

Honestly, I can't believe it's taken so long for this to be addressed considering it's been an issue for awhile now. And individual cities upping their game won't do a damn thing, needs to be statewide if at all possible.

Say what you will about Oklahoma, but they beat us to the punch by a year.

For anybody questioning the time-line, OK state senate was making a move in Feb '07.

Scott,

I'm no expert on Texas state laws, but there was this from the referenced DMN article: "He noted that most recyclers already follow the recently toughened state law by making sure people selling metals provide government-issued identification."

So apparently there is something being done at the state level, although Garland mayor Ronald Jones said in the article that "State law recently put more teeth into regulations, but there is still more cities can do."

Well, someone flashing ID is all well and good - unless they keep it documented, glancing at an ID doesn't mean much. It shouldn't be left up to cities to be more stringent; thieves will simply hit cities where laws are lax. State legislators should follow the lead of Dallas, imo.

We got owned by Oklahoma, Alex. Oklahoma.
