Woman shot, killed by her brother in Roanoke motel pool

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (2)

At around 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, Kelly Atkins was swimming in the pool at the Best Western in Roanoke. Her brother, Aric McGowan, somehow (?) accidentally shot her with a gun belonging to a friend of his who serves as a police officer in Sweetwater. Ms. Atkins was killed by the gunshot.

McGowan is in the Denton County Jail facing a manslaughter charge. The Roanoke police have reason to suspect that alcohol may have been a factor in the shooting.

First of all please get the facts straight before posting information. I know this family first hand and it was truley accidental. Aric did not know the gun on the table was real. It was eli's (their brother in law) whom is a deputy sherrif in nolan county. They were out by the pool when the inncident occured. Everyone wants to talk mess about the situation and make it seem like Aric jus shot her on purpose. No one posting these things no the family or the correct facts. Aric and Keli were very very close to eact other. Aric was very protective of her. Anyone whose know them know that this was not done out of rage or hate. Aric loved her very much and it was a freak accident. Eli should not have had the gun out on the table just as aric should not have picked it up. No one can change whats happen or blame each other. People need to realize the family see's these site's and they have enough to deal with after losing Keli and now the problems Aric has. Please be kind and not make judgements on this family. keli you were an awesome mother, friend, and sister. You touched the lives of many and you will be missed. Aric we know you and we know you never wanted any of this or to ever hurt her. Please hang in there. It's going to be hard. be strong. To the family I'm sorry for what you all are going through may GOD be with you all.

I don't see where in the Pegasus News story they claimed malicious intent on Aric's part.

Although this story completely justifies the fact that I flinch whenever anything even resembling a firearm is pointed at me, including, but not limited to, paintball guns.
