Today at 3 p.m. the Dallas Central Appraisal District will release the preliminary 2008 property values for Dallas County. This information will not only help cities and school districts predict their budgets, but homeowners could get a glimpse of their predicted tax bills.

The report will be based on data from last year, meaning that it will not reflect the housing recession after January 1, 2008. Dallas County is expecting at least a 3% property value increase, significantly lower than last year's rise of 20%. The budget office is expecting a record number of property owners to protest their individual values... as property owners, not people.

Update: Preliminary numbers show a 12.7% increase in taxable property values in Dallas County, appraised at $181.7 billion. The City of Dallas itself was above the curve, with a 14% increase that could raise next year's property taxes by 5%. Though in a considerably better position than much of the country, but the increase was not enough to balance the city's intended budget.
