Cici’s Pizza and Half Price Books debut “Feed Your Brain” campaign

— In support of the "No Child Left Behind Act," CiCi's Pizza is partnering with Half Price Books by launching a summer reading program that will encourage kids to read at least 15 minutes a day at least five days a week. Kids ages 10 and under, will earn reading rewards by keeping a reading log of their progress, supervised and approved by a parent. Efforts will be rewarded with a free children's buffet at CiCi's Pizza or a $3 coupon card valid at Half Price Books. The "Feed Your Brain" program will run from Sunday, June 1 through Saturday, August 30. Rewards are available nine weeks during the months of June and July and reading logs will be accepted through July 31.

"Chew on this -- ongoing studies have shown that all young people, especially those from low-income families, face a significant risk of losing ground academically over the summer months. And a staggering 32.5 million students in grades four through twelve read below the minimum standards," said Craig Moore, president of CiCi's Pizza. "As a family-oriented brand, CiCi's Pizza has a great opportunity to encourage our younger generation to 'feed their brain' by simply picking up a book. By continuing to read for 15 minutes a day, five days a week over the summer -- we will certainly support and celebrate that effort with a free visit to our buffet!"

"We are thrilled to partner with CiCi's Pizza on this exciting venture," said Kathy Doyle Thomas, executive vice president of Half Price Books. "If we can encourage kids to read a recipe to Mom in the kitchen, assembly directions to Dad, or Grandma's favorite classic -- we are helping further their future by nurturing a love for reading. Having the ability to reach kids through a reward incentive program helps make reading more exciting."

So, uh, how carefully do they check this? Because, uh... I recently adopted like a dozen kids. But they're allergic to pizza. So they'll do the reading and I'll do the eating.

Chew on this -- ongoing studies have shown that all young people, especially those from low-income families, face a significant risk of decreased ability to retain information due to deficient nutrition like that found in Cici's pizza.

All the more reason for me to take their pizza prize. I'd be doing the community a big fat favor.

If this "free" children's buffet coupon is one like we received recently, it says additionally "with one paid adult buffet." Yucko, I'd pass on the pizza and take the book coupon instead.
