Who doubts this could become catastrophic before it gets better? I remember shootings at gas lines during the gas crunch of the '70s. Scary stuff!
Once the powers that be reach the target profits they're looking for, will the price actually go down? It's ironic that on the oil companies part- they're only doing what we all do as capitalist Americans-make as much profit as the market will bear. It's the American way. In this regard, our American Dream- "big, fast, dramatic, flashy", is turning on us.
I can't help but think that the good ol' boy- ex-oil man in the White House had a hand in mucking up this fiasco along with so many other wasted leadership opportunities.
But he'll be gone soon.
It's a shame that you and I have let ourselves become addicted to the oil-dependent automobile lifestyle, but it is what it is!
It will take a tremendous effort for you and I to change the way we live and work, but at some point, we'll have to.
Even Rome finally fell.
We've given up too much control of our lives to politicians.
We have to find ways of being much more self-reliant- not only as a country, but as a people.
Or...will we just change the channel and let our grandchildren deal with it.

Collin: Get in line. =) I've been drooling over the Tesla for a while now... Schweet car.
Hmm, any designs for converting current gas engines to run off drool? Or did they decide instead to use the sweat off our brows to run the gas pumps and leave it at that?

Alex Bentley, says:
Yeah, the Tesla's a schweet car ... if you can afford the $109,000 price tag. Also seems like it looks exactly like other cars I've seen already. I'm just hoping that the Aptera will become available outside of California. Similar mileage, not as fast (but no slowpoke either), decent storage -- all for $27,000-$30,000.

David Gouldin, says:
Of course the Tesla looks like other things you've seen. They say right on their site that they're using the body of a Lotus Elise. The $109k isn't going into a custom designer body. It's going into engineering and a crapload of Li-ion batteries.
There was a very cool NOVA episode a couple of months ago on new car technologies. It's worth watching.
