Dallas ISD kicks off its summer food services program

— The Dallas Independent School District’s Food and Child Nutrition Services Department, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Texas Department of Agriculture will kick off the 2008 Summer Food Services Program in Dallas at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 12, at the YMCA * Moorland Branch, 907 E. Ledbetter Road.

The Summer Food Services Program, which will run from June 9 through August 8, with the exception of July 4, will ensure that Dallas’ youth will not go without proper nutrition during the summer months. The program will provide free lunch and snacks to Dallas children and youth, ages one through 18, at any of the more than 135 sites throughout the city. Among the participating sites are:

  • Park South YMCA, 2500 Romine Ave.
  • YMCA at White Rock, 7301 Gaston Ave.
  • Oak Cliff Family YMCA, 6701 S. Hampton Road
  • Moorland Family YMCA, 907 E. Ledbetter Road
  • Girls Inc. West, 2607 Toronto St.
  • Girls Inc. South, 4411 Meadow St.
  • Turnkey Boys and Girls Club, 6539 Treetop Lane
  • Salvation Army Pleasant Grove, 8341 Elam Road
  • Mildred Dunn Recreation Center, 3322 Reed Lane

The campaign will also encourage Dallas’ children and youth to engage in physical activities and healthy eating habits during the summer.

Bill Ludwing, USDA Food and Nutrition Services Southwest Regional Administrator; Todd Staples, Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner; and Deborah Owens, Director, Dallas ISD’s Training and Quality Assurance*Food and Child Nutrition Services Department, will be present during the kickoff.
